Hotel El Convento
Located in the heart of San Juan's historic old city, Hotel El Convento, has the distinction of being the only Small Luxury Hotel of the World in Puerto Rico. It was the first hotel to join the IHE portfolio of hotels and casinos in 1997.
The extensive renovation and rebranding of this boutique property earned it recognition by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the 23 best new hotels in the world, and a year later, AAA’s four diamond distinction.
El Convento was originally a Carmelite convent when it was built nearly 350 years ago. The Archbishop of San Juan closed the convent in 1903. The structure had many “colorful" uses until it was converted to a hotel in the early 1960s by Robert Frederic Woolworth, heir to the Woolworth fortune. Positioned as a European style luxury hotel, El Convento was a favorite destination of the glitterati of the era, from actors to musicians.
In less than ten years, the owners turned the hotel over to the government. For years, it languished as a mid-market hostelry with no clear identity and badly in need of a facelift.
IHE undertook a meticulous restoration of El Convento’s Spanish Colonial architecture and design. Architectural Digest recognized the magnificent oeuvre in 2002 with an extensive article in its May issue, describing the “celestial spirit” of this historic landmark.
El Convento is a proud member of Historic Hotels of America. It features 58 luxurious rooms, a fitness center, library, plunge pool and Jacuzzi, four restaurants, four exquisitely appointed meeting rooms and although located in the heart of the historic walled city of Old San Juan, guests can enjoy the beach and pool facilities of one of the IHE beachfront sister properties.

It's unique location makes this the perfect place for both business travel and vacationers.
The rebranding of the hotel was part of a master plan which included the Gallery Plaza tower and commercial complex. IHE currently manages the entire commercial area which includes the parking facilities, leasing of three restaurants (Café Pierre, Under the Trees and Silk), one designer store (Pilar Moreno) and one banquet hall (Alquimia), as well as the 14,000 square foot LIV fitness center.

Built in 1957, the Hotel Pierre was operated as an independent property until 2001 when IHE acquired the management contract for this 184 -room hotel catering to the economy business traveler. Branding the property as a Best Western, immediately resulted in a positive impact on the hotel's financial performance. The next step in the hotel’s evolution was a $30 million renovation and rebranding, which was completed in October 2007 with the hotel’s debut as the first Doubletree by Hilton in the Caribbean. IHE managed the franchisee selection including negotiation of the final Franchisee License Agreement, and managed the design and reconstruction of all 184 guest rooms, enlarging and remodeling of the lobby area, as well as renovation and addition of four meeting rooms.

Courtyard by Marriott
Isla Verde Beach Resort
In 2003, after an extensive renovation and rebranding, the Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort, joined the IHE portfolio of hotels and casinos.
First opened in 1991 as the Crowne Plaza Hotel & Casino, this property sustained substantial damage from Hurricane Georges in September, 1998. The present owners repaired and remodeled all 260 guest rooms including all new furnishings, air conditioning units and extended the $26 million transformation to the lobby, restaurants and the newly named Casino del Sol, which is operated by International Hospitality Group.
In addition to bringing the Courtyard brand to Puerto Rico for the first time, IHE repositioned the property as an upscale oceanfront business hotel, while gaining accolades from guests and the hospitality industry alike. Consistently ranking as the number 1 hotel in Carolina, Puerto Rico on tripadvisor.com, the Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort has been named the Best of the Best by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC) in 2004 and recognized as the leading hotel for overall guest satisfaction, housekeeping service and quality index that same year. In the following years, it was recognized by the PRTC for maintenance consistency and as a super host. Marriott International bestowed its prestigious International Diamond Award on the hotel in 2006 and in 2010 recognized the hotel’s sales force with the Regional Sales Team award.
While on a tour of the property, Marriott International Chairman and CEO Bill Marriott remarked that the hotel was a “Courtyard on steroids!” but perhaps comments like the following from a recent guest which posted on tripadvisor.com tell the best story of the hotel’s success, “Awesome staff, Awesome property, Awesome food, Awesome stay.”

A Renaissance Resort
Unlike the other properties in the IHE portfolio, we both developed and manage this architectural gem.
Built in 1958, La Concha has a storied past in Puerto Rico’s social and cultural life. Originally designed by Toro Ferrer Arquitectos of San Juan, the building was a masterpiece of the tropical modernism arquitectural style of the era, with its shutter-clad breezeways, cross ventilation and natural illumination, open lobbies that accentuate the connection between inside and outside, delicate pre-cast concrete grillwork, grand staircases and curved pools and waterfalls. The concrete shell which gave the hotel its name and was the site of the original supper club, is considered in modern text books as “one of the high watermarks of Puerto Rico’s national architecture.”
After decades of neglect of this government built property, resulting in an alteration of the original design, La Concha was finally shut down for nearly ten years. IHE was selected by the Government of Puerto Rico in January 2004, under a 99-year lease agreement with the government’s Hotel Development Corporation, to renovate the original 248 room structure and add a 235-room adjacent suite tower.
Reopened by IHE on December 8, 2007 after a $220million renovation headed by Marvel Marchand Architects and Rosselló Interior Designs, the hotel maintains its tropical modernist roots while combining a latino chic vibe. Renaissance Hotel & Resorts, the upscale full-service brand of the Marriott International hotel chain, was the perfect fit. La Concha embodies, a distinctive, stylish hotel that celebrates local Puerto Rican flavor.
Selected as one of the Top 21 Hottest Caribbean Escapes in 2009 by The Travel Channel, recognized as one of Architectural Digest’s 2009 Top Ten and chosen in 2008 by Condé Nast Traveler as Puerto Rico's hottest luxury hotel destination, La Concha is San Juan’s quintessential beach resort.
